AI has changed how fast a website can be built. A developer with AI tools can draft page copy, generate layouts and write clean code in a fraction of the time it took two years ago. We use AI in our own workflow every day.
What AI has not changed is what makes a website rank. Google still needs to understand what each page is about, trust that it is accurate, and see that it is the best answer for a search. This checklist shows how to keep AI’s speed while doing the SEO work professionally, in the order we follow on client builds.
The rule: let AI handle production, never strategy. Humans decide which pages exist, which keyword each page targets, and which facts are true. AI helps write, design and code to that plan.
Phase 1: Plan before you prompt
Most AI websites fail here, before a single page exists.
1. Define the business facts AI must not invent
Write a one-page fact sheet: services, service areas, prices you are willing to show, years in business, real results, certifications, contact details and hours. AI tools fill gaps with confident guesses. If a fact is not on your sheet, it does not go on the site.
2. Build the keyword map
List every search your customers make, group them by intent, and assign one main keyword to one page. This decides your sitemap. We explain the full process in How to Structure a Website for SEO: Keyword Mapping That Most Agencies Get Wrong.
3. Plan the structure and URLs
Turn the map into a hierarchy: homepage, service hubs, individual service pages, then supporting articles. Write the URL slug, title tag and H1 for every page in a spreadsheet before design starts.
4. Plan internal links
For each page, note which pages it links to and with what anchor text. Articles link to the service they support. Service pages link to their hub and to related services.
Phase 2: Use AI to draft, then make it yours
5. Prompt per page, not per website
Never prompt “write my website.” Give AI one page at a time with its brief:
- Main keyword and supporting keywords
- Search intent: what the visitor wants to do
- H1 and the H2 outline from your plan
- Facts from your fact sheet only
- The internal links to include
- The call to action
A focused brief produces a focused page. A vague prompt produces the same generic copy every AI site has.
6. Add what AI cannot know
This is where your page earns its ranking. Add your real process, your pricing approach, photos of your work, local details, common customer questions from your inbox, and your honest opinion. Google’s guidance on generative AI content asks site owners to focus on accuracy, quality and relevance, and to fact-check AI output before publishing.
7. Edit for people, then for search
Cut filler like “In today’s digital landscape.” Lead each page with a direct two- or three-sentence answer to the main search. Then confirm the keyword appears naturally in the title, H1, URL, opening paragraph and at least one H2.
Phase 3: Build it so search engines can read it
8. Put all text in the HTML
Choose a platform that sends finished HTML to the browser. Google can render JavaScript, but most AI crawlers cannot: a 2024 Vercel study found that none of the major AI crawlers it tested render JavaScript. Static frameworks like Astro do this by default. 9. Set the on-page essentials on every page
| Element | Rule |
|---|---|
| Title tag | Unique, about 50 to 60 characters, main keyword near the start |
| Meta description | Unique, up to about 160 characters, written to earn the click |
| H1 | Exactly one per page, describes the topic |
| H2 and H3 | Logical outline, phrased like real questions |
| Canonical tag | Points to the page’s own preferred URL |
| Open Graph tags | Title, description and image for social sharing |
| Image alt text | Describes the image honestly |
10. Add structured data
Use JSON-LD schema that matches each page: LocalBusiness or Organization on the homepage, Service on service pages, BlogPosting on articles, FAQPage where there are visible FAQs, and BreadcrumbList site-wide. Review AI-generated schema carefully, because it often includes fields with made-up values.
11. Create the crawl files
- sitemap.xml listing every page you want indexed
- robots.txt that does not block important pages
- llms.txt, a plain-language summary of your business and key pages for AI tools
- A custom 404 page that links back to your main sections
12. Make it fast on a phone
Compress images to WebP or AVIF, set width and height on every image, lazy-load anything below the first screen, and avoid heavy sliders and autoplay video. Test with PageSpeed Insights on mobile, not desktop.
Phase 4: Check before you launch
13. Run the View Source test
Open each template, view the page source, and search for a sentence of body text. If it is not there, crawlers that do not run JavaScript cannot see it.
14. Check for duplication and cannibalization
Make sure no two pages share a title, H1 or main keyword. AI loves to repeat the same phrase across pages; this is where that habit gets caught.
15. Validate and test
- Run every template through Google’s Rich Results Test
- Check for broken links
- Submit every form and confirm the message arrives
- Check the 404 page
16. Fact-check every claim
Read each page against your fact sheet. Remove any statistic, review, award or client name you cannot verify. One invented fact can damage trust more than a missing one.
Phase 5: Launch and grow
17. Connect Search Console and analytics
Verify the site in Google Search Console, submit the sitemap, and set up analytics. If you are replacing an old site, put 301 redirects in place for every old URL before launch. A technical SEO migration check catches broken redirects before they cost you rankings.
18. Keep publishing to the plan
Use your keyword map as a content calendar. Each month, add articles that answer real questions and link them to the right service page. AI can draft them; your experience makes them worth reading.

The bottom line
AI makes website building faster. It does not make it smarter. The sites that rank are the ones where a person did the research, set the structure and checked the facts, and then used AI to get there sooner.
